The Environmental Department building for the city of Campinas was conceived aiming a complete integration with the park in which it is inserted. We propose fluid and linked ways around and throughout the building together with several open air activities shelters by deep overhangs so that the architecture blends into the nature. As a public building planned to house activities related to environmental issues of the municipality, the design seeks to expose its structural and technical solutions to the maximum, making the visit to it an educational experience on sustainable construction.
The building’s roof is a composition of different materials that form layers with specific purposes. The translucent polycarbonate guarantees watertightness and lighting, the floating deck allows visitors to circulate, the green roof insulates the interior of the building and allows educational activities, the large eaves protect the building from the weather.
Six Glued Laminated Wooden (Glulam) frames make up the structure, the choice for using wood is justified by the low environmental impact. Walls are made of rammed earth blocks, with the soil used coming from earth movements. The vernacular walls guarantee the maintenance of the average temperature inside the building.
The rationality and modulation of the project allows the future expansion along the longitudinal axis.
