This competition entry for the Kiss Nightclub Fire Memorial – which ended the life of 242 young people in the night of January 27th of 2013 in the city of Santa Maria, southern Brazil – is based on the creation of an empty civic space in a dense and old area of the city, where most buildings are lined with the sidewalks.
The design seeks for maximum flexibility and suppresses as much as possible the use of doors or any other unnecessary elements that may create sense of closure and reclusion. The main facade is built with translucent materials that filters the light entering the memorial room. It’s tectonical independence allows it to be explored as a connection between the different levels while its slight tilt helps it reflect the skylight.
